Howard Nemerov (1920–1991) fue un poeta estadounidense. Fue dos veces Poeta Laureado Consultor en Poesía de la Biblioteca del Congreso, de 1963 a 1964 y nuevamente de 1988 a 1990. Por The Collected Poems of Howard Nemerov (1977), ganó el Premio Nacional del Libro de Poesía, el Premio Pulitzer de Poesía y el Premio Bollingen.
El gorrión en el zoológico
No hay barras demasiado juntas ni mallas demasiado finas
para mantenerme alejado del águila y del león,
a quienes los guardianes alimentan para que pueda cenar libremente.
Esto demuestra que si tienes el ingenio
para ser pequeño, común, adorable y vivir en la mierda,
aunque la jaula inquieta a los reyes, puedes liberarte de ella.

No bars are set too close, no mesh too fine
To keep me from the eagle and the lion,
Whom keepers feed that I may freely dine.
This goes to show that if you have the wit
To be small, common, cute, and live on shit,
Though the cage fret kings, you may make free with it.
