Joyce Sutphen (1949) creció en una granja en Minnesota. Obtuvo un doctorado en teatro renacentista de la Universidad de Minnesota y ha enseñado literatura británica y escritura creativa en el Gustavus Adolphus College en Saint Peter, Minnesota. Su primer poemario, Straight Out of View (1995), ganó el premio Barnard Women’s Poets Prize. Entre sus poemarios posteriores se incluyen Coming Back to the Body (2000), finalista del Minnesota Book Award, Naming the Stars (2004), ganador del Minnesota Book Award, First Words (2010) y Carrying Water to the Field: New and Selected Poems (2019). Ha recibido una beca McKnight Artist Fellowship y una beca de la Minnesota State Arts Board y fue nombrada poeta laureada de Minnesota en 2011.
