Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) fue un escritor y cirujano escocés. Fue conocido por escribir novelas picarescas como The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751) y The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), que influyeron en generaciones posteriores de novelistas británicos, entre ellos Charles Dickens. Sus novelas fueron modificadas profusamente por impresores contemporáneos; una edición autorizada de cada una de ellas fue editada por el Dr. O. M. Brack Jr. y otros.
