Jack Gilbert nació en Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, en 1925. Se educó en Pittsburgh y San Francisco, donde más tarde participó en el famoso Taller «Poetry as Magic» de Jack Spicer en el San Francisco State College en 1957.
Poco después de publicar su primer libro, Views of Jeopardy, en 1962, Gilbert recibió la beca Guggenheim y posteriormente se mudó al extranjero, viviendo en Inglaterra, Dinamarca y Grecia. Casi veinte años después de completar Views of Jeopardy, publicó su segundo libro, Monolithos.
Gilbert es autor de The Great Fires: Poems 1982-1992. Ha recibido el premio Lannan Literary Award for Poetry y la beca del National Endowment for the Arts. Monolithosganó el Premio Stanley Kunitz y el Premio American Poetry Review, y Views of Jeopardy ganó el Yale Younger Poets Series. Ambos libros fueron nominados para el Premio Pulitzer.
Falleció en Berkeley, California, en 2012.
